When the funding ended, the classes kept going

After A New Path closed, Yoga Angels Foundation paid to keep the Wellness And Mindfulness program running at Rio Cobre until 2020.

Programs funded by large international projects often end the day the grant does. When funding for A New Path came to a close, WAM could have ended the same way.

It didn’t, at least not right away. Yoga Angels Foundation decided to keep the program alive at one site, the Rio Cobre center in Spanish Town, using its own resources. Rio Cobre was where WAM had the deepest roots, with eleven people trained and certified to teach.

Through 2020

The Foundation kept WAM going at Rio Cobre until 2020. When COVID-19 arrived, sessions continued occasionally for as long as it was possible. In the end, the budget and safety conditions at the location made it impossible to carry on.

Where things stand

WAM is paused, not finished. The curriculum exists, the approach has been tested in three facilities, and there are people in Jamaica who are trained to teach it. What is missing is funding.

The Foundation’s longer-term goal is to build a permanent alternative healing center where this kind of work can be based, rather than depending on one grant cycle at a time.

If you can help restart WAM, as a funder, a facility or a partner, please get in touch or make a gift.
